How to Prepare for Spring

This week I’ve been thinking about spring. With the snow coming down and the temperatures plummeting, it seems hard to think that spring is actually coming, but soon enough the snow will melt and it will slowly warm up. Before you know it, spring will be here, so now is the time to think about getting ready for spring.

If you want to start a garden, this is a great time to start planning. Do you want to do vegetables, fruit, or flowers? What varieties and where will you plant them? Looking through seed catalogs and plant catalogs with their bright colors can break up some of the winter grays. If you want to start from seed, you can watch the little plants pop up while you wait to be able to plant them. Even if you aren’t planning to start a garden, it can be fun to think about what you might want to do. I don’t think I’m doing any planting this spring, but I like thinking about what I will do in some future spring.

Spring cleaning naturally comes to mind. It’s so refreshing to be able to open up the windows again and flush your home with fresh air. While you’re waiting for spring, are there any organizational projects that you want to tackle to help your spring cleaning go even better? I’m tackling our household paper organization and dealing with old clothes by spending a little bit of time on it each weekend and making incremental progress. By spring, I’ll be happily done with them and ready to move on.

How will you spend your time when it’s spring? If you’ve spent a lot of the winter inside, you may want to prioritize spending time outside. Even chilly spring weather can feel great compared to freezing temperatures, so you may find it easy to spend more time outside. I’ve been trying to spend some time outside each week but the cold usually gets me indoors quickly. I’m not sure I can accurately convey how much I am looking forward to going on ice-free walks and sitting outside without too many extra layers on.

While waiting for spring, it’s also good to appreciate winter. Are there any winter projects that you still want to finish? Have you made enough hearty meals and have had enough hot chocolate? Are there other kitchen comfort food projects that you want to take on while the weather is still inspiring warmth-seeking? I have a fleeting thought that I may still attempt making croissants this winter, but I’m waiting for the picture-perfect cold, snowy weekend to try it out. I know they are labor intensive, but it sounds like an ideal challenge and we’ll see if I get there. I’ve got a few more stews with delicious buttermilk biscuits planned for winter as well as a few more pot pies, food I never want to eat in warmer weather.

I’ve been appreciating the quiet beauty of the freshly fallen snow and recognizing that, like all things, winter will not last forever. It will be past before we know it, so it’s important to recognize and try to enjoy the chill in the air. This was one winter where the weather wasn’t canceling our plans because they were already on hold. We’ve adapted by doing phone calls and video hangouts. It’s not exactly the same but it doesn’t usually need to be rescheduled when there is a foot of snow outside, which is a bright side.

Good luck with whatever and however you decide to prepare for spring.
